Peptitler (Grekçe: πεπτίδια; “ufak tefek sindirilebilirler”) tanımlanmış bir düzende, α-amino asitlerin birbirine destelanmasıyla oluşan güdük polimerlerdir.[1] Bir amino hamız lakırtııntısı ile diğeri arasındaki bağ bir “amit bağ” yahut peptit bağı olarak bilinir.[1]
Tetrapeptit (Oligopeptit)
Proteinler polipeptit molekülleridir (yahut çok sayıda polipeptit ast birimi barındırır). çizgi nüans peptitlerin güdük, polipeptitlerin/proteinlerin ise uzun olmasıdır.[1]
Protein sentezi sırasında her amino hamız, öbür amino asite sürekli, kırılmayan bir polimer olan polipeptid zincirleriyle destelanır. Polipeptid örgüsına acımasızlan amino asitlerin her biri örgüya peptid destelarıyla destelanır. Peptid bağının oluşumu sırasında amino asitlerden birinin amino grubu ile diğerinin karboksil grubu, aradan bir sutaş çıkması sonucu birleşirler.[1]
Yaklaşık bir polipeptit zinciri 450 amino asitten oluşur.[1] Aşina en uzun polipeptit, yaklaşık 27,000 amino asitten oluşan, kas dokusunda kâin “titin”dir. Polipeptid zincirine acımasızlan amino asitlere lakırtııntı (residue) adı verilir.[1] Zincirin bir ucundaki lakırtııntı, bağ yapmamış, boydak amino grubu barındırır ve N ucu olarak adlandırılır. Aynı şekilde zincirin öbür ucundaki boydak α-karboksil grubu olan lakırtııntıevet C ucu adı verilir.
